The Nelson Mandela Foundation in partnership with the Gauteng Provincial government and the City of Tshwane launched the 2017 Mandela Remembrance Walk & Run on 15 November in its 4th year of existence.
During the launch, the Foundations’ trustee Tokyo Sexwale shared some of his memories from the time he spent with Madiba on Robben Island to when they both serve a democratic South Africa “Today we are gathered in this safe space to remember Madiba.
Sexwale announced this year’s theme of “Remembering Madiba: Deepening democracy and building an inclusive society” was chosen as a reminder for all to reflect on the society and the world Madiba dreamt of.
The race route goes pass five heritage sites, presenting the prefect opportunity for participants to familiarize themselves with the country’s rich history in real time.
This year also sees an introduction of a market, where runners and families can mingle and enjoy themselves in the spirit of Madiba.
15 000 participants took part in 2016 and this year entries have been caped at 20 000 participants, the Mandela Remembrance Walk & Run will take place on Sunday 10 December 2017from the Union Buildings Pretoria, Tshwane.
The closing date for both hand in and online applications is 30 November 2017 early bird specials applicable, details available on the website. Entry fees includes race entry, goodie bag with t-shirt & cap.
All proceeds raised from the entry fees are donated to The Nelson Mandela Foundation to continue with the work the foundation does to preserve and promote the Madiba legacy.
