Afrika tikkun in Association with Beit Issie Shapiro and Harvard Law School recently held a 2nd annual Disability Rights Symposium in Johannesburg CBD under the theme “Memeza,Bazokuzwa” which means “Shout, they will hear you”
On the expert panel we had Prof Michael Stein from Harvard Law School,Lidia Pretorius from SA human rights commission, Zita Hansungule from the center of child law research as well as Anjuli Leila Maistry from the centre of Child law.
“It’s hard for us to get disabled children into schools so you can imagine how hard it is for parents with no legal background to find good schools for their disabled children” said Anjuli who also believes that special schools discriminate against learners as some of them can function well in what is considered normal schools.
The aim of the event is to represent the rights of people living with disability. Parents of living with disabilities were present and adviced by the expert panel on how to deal with their individual issues.
